Parcels of moorland, redundant water storage tanks, a sewage pumping station and even a former water treatment works are going under the hammer next month.

Around 30 sites owned by South West Water, which are no longer needed by the company, are being sold at public auction on Thursday 19 November at the Lakeside Centre at Roadford Lake, between Launceston and Okehampton.

Seven underground water storage tanks, from Amalveor in the far west of Cornwall to Yealmpton near Plymouth, are among the lots. The auction will also feature a variety of land parcels, including small areas by Drift reservoir, near Penzance, and at Marypole Head water storage tank in Pennsylvania, Exeter.

Other lots of interest include a water pumping station in St Just, Cornwall, and a redundant building on the site of Watercombe Water Treatment Works on Dartmoor.

The company's Head of Property and Support Services, Guy Busby, said: "We regularly auction redundant assets to reduce our costs and keep customers' bills as low as possible. Fifty per cent of the proceeds of the sale of the land will be returned to customers through South West Water's next price setting. So far, after 10 auctions, £5million will have been returned to customers in this way.

"Novelty sites with small areas of surplus land always attract strong interest as people are able to invest relatively modest sums for their 'little piece of England'. Several of our former storage reservoirs and pumping stations have been converted by their new owners into unusual homes."
