£290,000 scheme to replace ageing water mains in St Columb Road

A major project to replace ageing water mains in a Cornish village gets under way in July.

During the £290,000 scheme South West Water will be upgrading 909 metres of old water mains in St Columb Road to address the issue of frequent bursts in the area.

Work starts on Monday 25 July and will take seven weeks.

St Francis Road will be closed to traffic, from the junction of Parka Road up to and including the junction with The Drang, from Monday 25 July to Sunday 11 September.

The Drang will be closed to traffic from Monday 25 July to Friday 2 September. Temporary access for residents will be via Chapel Road.

Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.

The work is taking place during the school summer holidays due to the location of Indian Queens Community Primary School on The Drang.

First Kernow bus services 21, 93 and 95 will operate revised timetables and routes during the closure of St Francis Road. Bus stops on St Francis Road will not be in use.

School bus services that use St Francis Road will also operate revised timetables and routes. Affected pupils will receive a letter from Cornwall Council when they get their new bus permit.

Rubbish and recycling collection dates will not change but will take place earlier than usual. Bins should be ready for collection by 7am.

Project manager James Howourth said: "We know that the frequent bursts in the area have been a source of frustration for local residents and businesses. This scheme will address the problem once and for all, although we do appreciate that the road closures will cause some inconvenience.

"There will be minimal interruptions to people's water supplies, and we will notify 48 hours in advance if we need to turn off the supply for any length of time.

"In the meantime, all businesses in the village will remain open and we would urge people to support their local traders during our work."
