Emergency sewer work on Cowick Street, Exeter

28th July 2017

Temporary traffic lights will be in use at the top of Cowick Street, Exeter, from Monday 31 July for two weeks.

This is to allow South West Water to carry out emergency repairs to a damaged sewer. This will involve digging 1.5 metres down to the pipe and replacing a four-metre section.

During the work, the four-way traffic lights at the junction of Cowick Street, Dunsford Road, Buddle Lane and Cowick Lane and pedestrian crossing points will be switched off and replaced with temporary four-way traffic lights and temporary pedestrian crossing points nearby.

A dedicated traffic light operator will be on site during the work to ensure any issues are dealt with promptly and the lights can be manually operated during peak times.

South West Water Project Manager James Howourth said: “We appreciate that this essential work may cause some traffic delays, but we are working hard with local businesses and the council to ensure disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.

“We will be working longer days, although no later than 7pm so as not to disturb local residents, and weekends if necessary to ensure the repair work is completed as soon as possible.”
