South West Water to kick-start careers for region’s unemployed young people

02nd December 2020

South West Water is providing jobs for 50 unemployed young people across the region as part of the Government’s new Kickstart scheme.

The Kickstart scheme funds six-month paid jobs to provide fully funded opportunities for 16-24 year olds – who are claiming Universal Credit and are at risk of long-term unemployment – to gain valuable work experience.

As one of the first companies to sign up to the scheme, South West Water has placements available now. Placements are available in business administration, customer service, service delivery and bio-resources teams with more being available throughout 2021. South West Water has uniquely announced a further incentive of a £500 bonus for each person who completes a placement in addition to comprehensive training and support.

Group Chief People Officer, Adele Barker, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting the government’s Kickstart scheme and offering much needed prospects for young people in our region who are suffering from a lack of opportunities as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

“As a company we are passionate about providing opportunities to young people in the South West and we believe that by investing in the future of our region, we are not only improving the quality of life for today's residents and visitors but are also taking responsibility for future generations.”

South West Water has also committed to offering 500 new apprenticeships over the next 5 years, some of which could be available to those who complete their six months under the Kickstart scheme.

Katy Lambert, Digital Communications Assistant at South West Water, knows exactly what benefits can come from an apprenticeship with the company, after completing her apprenticeship before securing a full-time position this year. Katy said: “Doing an apprenticeship was a great gateway for me into full-time employment with South West Water. Getting paid whilst working and learning was very appealing to me and now, thanks to that opportunity, I have a qualification in digital marketing and a job that I love.”

Anyone interested in undertaking a work placement under the Kickstart scheme should speak to their Work Coach at the Job Centre Plus to find out more details.
