South West Water to protect excellent bathing waters in Dawlish

As part of an ongoing commitment to protect the environment, reduce pollution and protect bathing waters, South West Water has begun work on a scheme to upgrade parts of the sewerage network in Dawlish.

The work, which is due to be completed in April 2022, will involve installing new pipes within the highways of Longlands, Stockton Road, Old Town Street, Penfield Gardens and Brook Street.

These pipes will remove surface water from the existing sewer system to alleviate floods and spills during periods of wet weather.

South West Water’s Project Manager, Patrick Nolan, said: “The bathing waters in Dawlish Warren are currently classed as excellent – the highest standard of rating possible – and we want to keep it that way with this essential work.

“Our investigations carried out between November 2020 and February 2021 provided more detailed surveys of the sewers and confirmed that surface water removal would be beneficial.

“Due to the location of the sewer and to keep our teams and the public safe, there will be a series of road closures from Wednesday 4 August 2021 until the scheme is complete. Diversions will be clearly signed and maintained 24/7 throughout these closures and we’ll let those residents affected know in advance.

“During our works on this essential sewer upgrades, we aim to cause as little disruption as possible."
