A day at the beach is usually remembered for years to come. Whether it was playing footie on the sand, surfing on the waves, or when a seagull went and stole someone’s pasty.

Thankfully, a day at the beach in the South West is rarely disappointing. However, we’ve got a handy online tool you can use to make sure your day remains safe and enjoyable (although we have no control over the seagulls…).

Check out our 20 Top Tips.

Back in 2016, we joined forces with Cornwall Council, the Environment Agency, Keep Britain Tidy, Marine Conservation Society, RNLI, South West Coast Path Association, Surf Life Saving, Great Britain and Visit Cornwall to launch BeachWise.

Working together, we produced an online tool that gives you 20 Top Tips for a safe day at the beach.

Since then, we’ve held BeachWise Forums which are an opportunity for us and our partners to discuss rising issues that may impact the quality of our beaches. Over the years, there have been presentations on agricultural impacts on coastal waters, shellfish water improvement and bathing water compliance.

Discussions held at the forums have gone on to inform our plans and investments in the future.

BeachWise Forum

A BeachWise Forum meets every six months, usually before and after the bathing water season (15 May-30 September), to review bathing water quality and how we can keep our beaches clean.

The Forum is independently chaired by Malcolm Bell, Chief Executive of Visit Cornwall, and attended by organisations with an interest in ensuring that the South West continues to enjoy some of the cleanest beaches and seas in Europe.

Membership includes representatives from coastal Councils, South West Water, the Environment Agency, NGOs, and public health bodies.

(Unfortunately, we were unable to hold the forum throughout COVID-19, which is why there are no available documents for those years. We were delighted to resume the meetings in 2022.)
